Here is a partial write up by Dave Bertino:
Friday night was setup as a freebee. If you like Friday night you would pay for Saturday and Sunday. It worked! It was a blast.
We came a long way from P.V.C. banner stands to bike rail. The first time we set up the P.V.C. stands and put the sponsor banners on them the wind came up and we had a hell of a rodeo. Everybody scrambled to lay them down before they hit any cars. They were like guideless sailboats going down the street. We acquired some sand bags off a job site at first and main to cure our problem and yes we returned them to their proper owner. We finally made the switch to bike rail. A lot better.
Saturday, Bill Wasson and crew judging and Old Farts monitoring cross walks. See, we did not have Teen Challenge when we started. We had 10 crews with 5 – 6 on a crew. We were very lucky to get Teen Challenge to monitor those cross walks.
A first trophy presentation was on the stage of Ninth and Main. That was before they opened Ninth Street to drive through. There was DJ Bob Cuthbert, Uncle Larry and myself on stage. George Mazzacane won the Best of Show and as he heard his name he was to drive up (well if you are a Hot Rodder you know shit happens) His 40 would not start but the good family that George has, they all pushed his car to the stage.
Friday closing off the streets. There were about 6 or 8 of us working with Bud Stone. It would take us about 1 hour to get the biggest part of the streets closed off. Today we have 20 people and we get those streets closed in 20 minutes.
I remember one Friday night R.C. was not feeling good so he told Uncle Larry & myself that he was going home and that we were in charge. (What could possibly go wrong?) Everything was going good until Riverside’s finest R.P.D. said, this is your show and if you want Kenny Asche to do a burnout, have at it (do you remember the first part of this article about Rules?) So what could possibly go wrong to have Kenny do a burn out in the middle of the cruise route at Market & Fifth? Well, he did one of his signature figure 8’s. It was bad ass. Now how do you put the toothpaste back in the tube? Every car that was in a 1/8 mile had to spin his tires. Larry and I looked at each other and said, did we do this? We both looked at the Riverside Finest that did not have a care in the world and we said you need to stop this. There was about 8 moto cops that drove down the street 2 at a time until they all stopped spinning their tires. The next morning R.C. was at the drags asking us what the hell happened last night? We blamed the cops.
There was a trophy presentation that we did on University & Market where I had a great idea, so I thought. Was going to have a Butt that would open up and as it opened a puff of smoke and a car would come out to receive their trophy. You might ask “why would you?” Answer is “Just because”. Well, we could not find a Butt so we used a tent. We would close the tent with the car coming in from the back, charge it with smoke from two smoke machines as soon as the trophy winner’s name was announced the front of the tent would open up the car would drive out in a plume of smoke. Does this sound like something that the old farts would do?
When the trophy presentation was over we would pick up all the barricades and delineators and head to the drag strip (Riverside Airport). Dave Barnekow and crew worked all day setting up the K Rail on both sides of the track then when we showed up we would set the 3 staging lanes. Fast 16, Pre 1948 and Post 1948. That made a long day. We would finish at 11:00 or 12:00 then back the next morning.
Sunday Morning Buck was the guy with the 1/8 mile timing lights, they were very out dated. R.C. made a comment that the squirrel died turning the wheel but Buck always made them work. I was able to get an announcer booth from Mobile Modular where Bruce Flanders & Lindsay Godfrey could see the whole track with air-conditioning. Bruce was the perfect announcer. Lindsay was sharp with the timing slips & brackets, see, her Dad is a drag racer. Dave Barnekow worked the starting line. Sometimes we would have a little down time so Danny (asshole) Hensley and I would race our Indian Motor bikes. Bruce would get the crowd going by saying who wants the Yellow Indian to win. The crowd would go wild. Then he’d say who wants the Red Indian to win the crowd would go wild. The Red Indian always won. One time we raced the Mayor of Riverside Ron Loveridge against the Mayor of San Bernardino Judith Valles. Henry Hemborg got us two Fords to race. We’d build it up pretty good. Well, Judith beat Ron and Ron complained that his car was not running right. Word has it that Judith’s son-in-law Danny (asshole) Hensley took two plug wires off Ron’s motor. Fun stuff. Over the years we have had many sponsors and great volunteers.
In 2004 R.C. joined the race track in the sky. We looked for someone to fill his shoes and the one we looked to was Mark Godfrey. Mark and Finn Comer have kept this show going. I do miss all those meetings and Old Farts in R.C.’s kitchen and those late nights setting up the drags. 20 years of great memories. See all of you at the show. When the Mustang was first sold back in 1964, there was no such thing as a "pony car" or anything about a "sports" class. The Ford Mustang was introduced and iconized a whole new class of automobile, drawing the likes of the Pontiac Firebird, Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, and the Plymouth Barracuda. The Mustang even brought back excitement and renovation to the Challenger and Camaro in the 2000's with the "retro" look of the 2005 Mustang. Quite the revolutionary vehicle over the past fifty years!
The Mustang has also inspired the need for speed in racing events across the world, making a first appearance as a pace car for the 1964 Indy 500. This, with the sporty lines of the pony car and increasing power under the hood led to many events such as drag racing and the National Hot Rod Associations' own events, NASCAR, and drifting at the Formula Drift and D1 Grand Prix series.
This weekend, however, the Mustang has stirred the car enthusiasts with Strictly Stangs to host their annual one-night car show—MAD Mustangs After Dark right here at Raceway Ford. A small community event which started out in 2009, Mustangs After Dark has developed into a full-on Mustang event, with estimation of over 100 Mustangs in the club, and over 600 aficionados at the event alone! This has become a traditional Southern California event which gathers Mustangs from all over California and the outlying states.
MAD Mustangs After Dark and Strictly Stangs congregate all types of the steel equine. From your entry-level, to the BOSS 302, down to the GT350 Shelby and Bullitt and ROUSH, it’s all going to be here at Raceway Ford. Food and drinks and even a raffle or two. Don’t miss out on the biggest Ford pony show of the Inland Empire!
For six years, Ford has taken home top honors when it comes to the 1.0L EcoBoost engine, as the robust little three-cylinder was voted 2017 International Engine of the Year “Best Engine Under 1.0-liter”—remaining undefeated in the category since its inception in 2012. The 1.0L EcoBoost maintains ten separate International Engine of the Year records over the past such as an overall winner on a record three times, and also “Best Newcomer.”
Take us to your Liter!
“Our 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine has been a game-changer, setting the benchmark for compact, fuel-efficient engines with sophisticated EcoBoost turbocharging, direct fuel injection and Twin-Independent Variable Camshaft Timing technologies. Even with 10 International Engine of the Year awards under our belt, we’re still finding ways to push back the boundaries of powertrain engineering, and deliver even more benefit to our customers from this acclaimed small engine.”
-Joe Bakaj, VP Product Development, Ford of Europe.
With the considerable amount of technological changes in today’s modern society, the 1.0L EcoBoost engine has made several strides in the three-cylinder market. A 1.0L wasn’t even considered in a segment that
didn’t conjoin an electric motor of sorts, such as the first-generation Honda Insight back in 2000. Now, the hard-working EcoBoost has shown to be rather impressive, landing in the engine bays of the more peppy and sporty.
The 1.0L EcoBoost Engine, boasting 123hp and 148lb-ft of torque!
The 1.0L EcoBoost churns out 123hp and 148lb-ft of torque, again, quite the little miniature rocket for such a tiny engine. Comparing apples to apples (as close as apples can get), these figures get even more impressive – The next closest competitor, the tepid 3-cylinder Mitsubishi Mirage makes for about 74hp/74lb-ft of torque. Quite the difference.
A little fun fact; the 1.0L engine has the same power per liter (power density) as the 8.0L, 1001hp Bugatti Veyron! With all things considered, this isn’t a cheap, run of the mill engine—this is a first-rate engine. Just very small, as being Ford’s highest torque-per-liter of any engine in their lineup. An example of this advanced engineering is something that has been utilized for a few years now in a few other makes—cylinder deactivation, which shuts down one (or more) cylinders at light speeds or cruising to reduce running costs. This technology can disengage or re-engage one cylinder in 14 milliseconds—20 times faster than the blink of an eye without any compromise in performance. You don’t feel it—it is that precise.
There is plenty of reasons why Ford’s backpack sized 1.0L engine takes the acclaim as it does, but there isn’t anything better than experiencing it for yourself. Get behind the wheel and test drive one of these power plants today at Raceway Ford!
When one reflects upon the Fourth of July, America’s Independence from the British, they commonly associate the holiday with freedom, fireworks, parades, barbecues, baseball games, and political ceremonies held throughout, mostly enjoyed by the middle class. Independence Day isn’t known for the automobile. But it is all about celebrating America and the vast heritage that the USA is known for, and the automobile is a revolutionary cornerstone of America.
"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the
individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one."
Even though Henry Ford didn’t create the automobile, he was the inventor of the assembly line during the Industrial Revolution, catapulting the United States intothe lead of an industry that dated back decades before his time. This in turn provided affordable access for every American to own a motor car, and thus the Model T was born. The Ford Model T made way for the American way of life as the first affordable automobile and it opened travel on a massive scale to the middle-class. The Model T was then positioned as a reliable, easily maintained mode of mass transportation, totaling up to over 15 million models rolling off the assembly line.
The Model T became a powerful icon for American heritage and signified innovation for the rising middle class. The freedom to own an automobile at an affordable price was Henry Ford’s mission, and he thus succeeded, and the Ford Motor Company holds those values true to this day and continuing on Ford’s legacy.
Tomorrow, as you enjoy the red, white, and blue celebration of American freedom and traditions, and honor those who continue to protect those freedoms to this day, take a gander over at your vehicle, no matter if it’s a Ford in your driveway or another fine craftsmanship worthy of Henry Ford’s assembly line. The freedom to own has been epitomized by affordability for the middle class nearly a century ago by an analyst who wanted the best for the American people.
From all of us here at Raceway Ford, we wish you a safe and Happy Independence Day.
The 2018 Ford Expedition -- The most off-road capable Expedition Ever
The wrenches over at Ford Motor Company are going on an all-new Expedition.
And we're not talking about going through the Dearborn Hiking Trails.
With consideration in breathing new life into the twenty-one-year-old SUV line, the Expedition will come equipped with the lucrative FX4 package for the 2018 year. Synonymous with the off-road capabilities in the F-Series, the FX4 package has been a mainstay favorite for the fellas who prefer dirt to asphalt. Now, Ford will bring that same idea to the Expedition and take the idiom from “grocery hauler” to “off-road ready”.
The All New Terrain Management System™
Starting at the XLT trim, the FX4 Expedition bears Fords’ twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine with a grand galloping of 375 ponies and 470lb-ft of torque, along with the 10-speed automatic transmission. As with the F-Series, the FX4 Expedition screams off-road creditability with off-road tuned shocks, side steps, 18” FX4 styled wheels, and about a dozen skid plates to protect the more vital areas of your rugged ride, such as the engine, transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank. The Expedition FX4 also comes with an all-new electronic limited-slip rear differential to make it that much easier to tackle dirt, mud, sand, and boast the class-leading 9,300 pounds of towing.
The FX4 Expedition also mirrors some of its smaller brother’s Explorer Sport technology with the new Terrain Management System™. This enables the adventurous to optimize their driving dynamic to environmental conditions—from snow, to mud, sand and much more.
Best In Class tow rating of 9,300 pounds.
“The FX4 Off-Road package delivers off-road driving confidence,” said Mike Kipley, Expedition vehicle engineering manager. “The technology we’re using works to adapt to different driving conditions so customers can enjoy the adventure without worry.”
Aesthetically speaking, the FX4 package also gives a little more recognition courtesy of the aforementioned 18” dynamic wheels, chrome running boards, and a shorter spoiler, along with the FX4 badging. With Ford claiming that about 20% of current Expedition owners happen to use their beloved SUV for off-roading skirmishes, the company believes that the FX4 package will deliver and do the SUV travelling justice.
Although Ford hasn’t announced pricing for the Expedition FX4, strap in and prepare to hit the lot with about $50,000 at the starting line. Not since the Bronco will we have seen the likes of something so eye-appealing and worthy of dirt-trails beyond the daily life of concrete confinement. As for your next Expedition excursion, it will be the most off-road Expedition ever.

F-150 Raptor SuperCrew with four full-size doors provides rear passengers with more legroom and comfort on the trails and more space to stow gear while exploring the American and Canadian wilderness. SuperCrew’s 145-inch wheelbase is 12 inches longer than the standard Raptor SuperCab 133-inch wheelbase.
“F-150 Raptor means superior off-road capability, from rock crawling to sand running,” said Dave Pericak, Ford Performance global director. “With the addition of SuperCrew, F-150 Raptor customers can leave the pavement behind – without sacrificing comfort and space.”
Advanced materials – including high-strength steel and high-strength, military grade, aluminum alloy – help save up to 500 pounds versus the prior Raptor for improved off-road prowess. Combined with all-new EcoBoost engine technology, the next-generation F-150 Raptor’s power-to-weight ratio has been improved, making the truck even more agile off-road.
Toughest F-150 Raptor ever
The all-new F-150 Raptor starts with a purpose-built fully boxed frame – the backbone of the truck – that is the strongest in the F-150 lineup, featuring more high-strength steel than the outgoing Raptor.
F-150 Raptor’s chiseled looks are reminiscent of Trophy Trucks – the fastest and most powerful class of off-road pickups. F-150 Raptor is 6 inches wider than standard F-150 for enhanced stability off-road.
The all-new F-150 Raptor also boasts its first-ever dual exhaust and new 17-inch wheels with next-generation BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires designed for off-road performance.

This is the first year the Mustang has been offered to buyers in over 100 markets around the world - including those where [we - ed] have the temerity drive on the left side of the road.
The addition of RHD models allows exports to over 25 markets including the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Cyprus, Malta and a smattering of Caribbean islands. Ford did RHD Explorer and Taurus models for some of these markets in the mid-90s but sales did not meet expectations and the RHD models were dropped. This time around, the Edge SUV is also being made with RHD."

The annual Detroit Auto Show, or as it is now know around the world The North American International Auto Show, never fails to open the year with automotive excitement and this year the spot light is shinning on the Blue Oval. Over the last week the floor plan for the show was revealed and in the Ford display area were designated spots for display vehicles codenamed ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Phoenix’ which fueled the rumor mill to full output! We will get to what those had to reveal in a moment, first we want to get you the details as we know them for the third reveal of the first day of the show; the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor!
Building on the reputation of the most powerful and capable four wheel drive pickup ever factory produced, the next generation Raptor takes serious off- roading to the next level entirely! In addition to the all aluminum construction of the new truck making it lighter than the awesome truck it replaces the 2017 Raptor will get its power from a twin turbo 3.5L EcoBoost that will develop more horsepower and torque than the monster 6.2L in the 2014 if you can believe it! Power will reach the wheels through an all new 10-Speed automatic transmission and Raptor pilots will have SIX driving modes to ensure that power is used to its fullest! New driving modes include; Normal (everyday stuff), Street (spirited hi-performance driving), Weather (for inclement conditions), Mud/Sand (for typical off road stuff), Baja (when a high speed desert run is needed) and Rock (for the crawling opportunities)! Larger Fox Racing Shox with greater travel, tuned high flow dual exhaust and a bigger stronger transfer case are just a few more dream items on the massive list of improvements for this new beast!
Now, for the mystery of the Hummingbird…. This morning the cover was pulled off of the most powerful, track-ready Mustang ever built by Ford, the 2016 Mustang GT350R. And yes, the R stands for Ridiculously Awesome! From the all new and all amazing “19 CARBON FIBER wheels at each corner to the (now lower) roof this Pony is pure adrenaline top to bottom! Reworking the car for aerodynamic improvement the put the headlights at an inch lower than a stock Mustang and that’s not all! Out back there is a huge rear spoiler, also carbon fiber, which will help keep the hind quarters firmly land locked and help keep those massive tires gripping the tarmac! Maintaining traction was at the fore front of the Ford Performance Team because they knew it would be near impossible to harness the ponies that will be produced by the all new, first ever for Ford, flat plane crankshaft 5.2L V8 under the hood! Rumors have been flying and no firm numbers are available yet however its very safe to say that horsepower will be well above 500 and torque will be simply monstrous! At every point the eye focuses there is pure performance. On the outside there is a new rear diffuser and a multitude of new vents. Air coolers for engine oil and the 6-Speed manual transmission will keep the high revving action well lubricated and power will applied to the wide rears by a 3.73 ratio, limited slip Torsen rear axle. Set to go on sales later this year as a 2016 model racers and enthusiasts around the country have already made bee lines for their nearest dealerships to get their names on the waiting list!
And finally, the biggest news of the show, if not the year as a whole….. This morning Ford announced the return of an American built, world class supercar; the Ford GT! 2016 will be the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and to honor that momentous occasion will be no less than the most advanced Ford supercar ever; the Ford GT featuring the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever – a new twin-turbocharged Ford EcoBoost V6 producing more than 600 horsepower! Dreamed up by a passionate group of dedicated Ford Performance believers and then built with the specific intention of hunting Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and McLarens the Ford GT sets the new standard for the term Supercar. Built around a carbon fibers driver cell with aluminum front and rear sub-frames that have been encapsulated in structural carbon fiber body panels the GT promises an incredible on track driving experience with world class performance. From the huge ceramic disc brakes at each corner to the tear drop shaped, fighter aircraft inspires fuselage with enhanced visibility curved windshield, every aspect of the Ford GT screams ‘Full Bore Adrenaline Fueled Track Domination”! As it was meant to….
Full details will be coming soon on all three new additions to the Ford Performance line up and you can see more pics of the gorgeous GT HERE, read more on the GT350R HERE and the Raptor HERE. As always Ford fans, stay tuned here for the latest breaking news!

Both the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 and the class leading, twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost engines round out the available options. Inside and out the 2016 Explorer gets a host of new technologies! The available front 180-degree camera helps you see around corners, down alleys and out of parking spots. Second-row passengers with power hungry devices will find USB ports that will charge a phone or tablet at up to twice the speed of previous USB ports on higher model Explorers to make sure the entertainment never stops and there is a full charge once the destination is reached as well! Out back is an industry first rear view camera spray washer to keep your rear view always clear and the available hands free lift gate will make loading a breeze even when your hands are full. New to the Explorer line is the Platinum model that sets a new standard of luxury with sharp satin chrome accents throughout the body, from the unique Platinum grille to the rear liftgate, genuine wood accents throughout the interior, a standard dual-panel moonroof up top and gorgeous new 20-inch bright-faced wheels with dark painted pockets below. The standard, powerful 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 enables towing up to 5,000 pounds and the passing power to ensure a confident and sporty driving experience! Inside the Platinum edition is a new 500-watt Sony sound system sure to blow away even the staunchest audiophile and Nivana leather seating that will have drivers and passengers alike wanting to lock the doors and never leave! New sculpted exterior lines enhance the bold new look and more efficient LED lighting increases visibility while providing a striking new signature look. The 2016 Ford Explorer will be available for sale in Riverside early summer 2015 and pricing will be announced sometime in the Spring, stay tuned here as always for the latest information!

Recently Raceway Ford joined forces with the Riverside Police Officers Foundation to host a ‘Drive 4 UR Community’ event nearby in Moreno Valley and it was a huge hit! The Ford sponsored ‘Drive’ events are a great way to raise funds for really great causes, in this case the funds donated by Ford go to the RPD Youth Programs. A huge event was put together with the help of the Riverside Fire Department and many great community organizations, over twenty police and fire vehicles were on display in addition to the remote control bomb squad robots that drew tons of attention and the Riverside Police helicopter that stopped everyone to watch as it landed in a swirling cloud of dust! Visitors to the event had the opportunity to take a free, no obligation test drive in a new Ford provided by the Raceway Ford Team and for each test drive taken Ford Motor Company donated $20 to the effort! Many new Fords were on hand to be driven and checked out, the new 2015 Expedition got tons of attention but the most driven was the Ford Fusion! As the day wound down and activities wrapped up it was time for the chopper to lift off and the crowd gathered to wave them up, up and away! Huge thanks to our Police and Fire Department friends for making the day an awesome success! We’ll see ya again next year the the 2015 ‘Drive 4 UR Community’ folks!

Estimado Inland Empire,

The City of Grand Terrace recently held its 1st Annual Grand Terrace Veterans 5K Run to raise funds for the ‘Veterans Wall of FREEDOM’ monument to be built in the city’s Pico Park and Raceway Ford was a proud sponsor of this great community event. Almost 150 runners braved the high temps and humidity and had a great run on the relatively flat course that was lines with many volunteers and community members cheering and waving signs. The event was put on by the Grand Terrace Lions Club and the community support for a first time run was really impressive. Many volunteers also came out and made the event a well run and efficient activity, keeping the runners supplied with water at many stations along the route was critical and much appreciated! Team Raceway Ford was also there to show support with a team of runners! Our Vice President of Marketing Bill Chamberlain, Assistant General Manager Paul Cole and our man Mike theCarGuy all put on bibs and ran their best! Bill and Paul each claimed the 2nd Place in their age divisions with our resident ‘running man’ Paul posting a blistering 24:07 in the Inland Empire heat! A great time was had by all and some funds were raised for a great cause. We have posted some pics of the event on our Facebook page HERE and to learn how you can help support the ‘Veterans Wall of FREEDOM’ see their website HERE.
